Family Friendly Walks in Guildford

We're lucky to live in an area with so many fantastic walks right on our doorsteps. To give you some inspiration for your next outdoor adventure, we’ve spoken to some local Mums to find out their favourite places to go for a family walk in and around Guildford.

Family Friendly Walks In & Around Guildford

Whitmoor Common, Guildford

Recommended by Mez @caterpillarmusicguildford

  • Where: Whitmoor Common, Salt Box Road, GU3 3LH

  • Why we like it - A variety of different landscapes all in one walk. Wander through the woods, follow the paths across the heath, wave to trains from the railway bridge and even find the boardwalks to stomp along which lead to the lovely Jolly Farmer pub if you're up for a longer walk. Britten's Pond is also on Salt Box Road and has a circular walk with ducks to feed. It's worth noting though that although the two are very close, the common and the pond don't actually join up.

  • Parking? Yes, the main Salt Box Road car park and the separate one for Britten's Pond. Charges usually apply.

  • Is it pushchair friendly? Parts of Whitmoor Common are fine for a hardy or off-road buggy, if you stick to the wooded areas. The paths across the heath can be very sandy in summer and muddy in winter. Britten's Pond is buggy friendly all year round.

Guildford Castle

Recommended by Louise @surreyandthecity

  • Where - In the middle of Guildford Town Centre, minutes from the cobbled high street.

  • Why we like it - It’s perfect for kids (and adults) of all ages, so much to explore and best of all it’s all free! Our daughter (2) loves the secret Alice Garden (a nod to Lewis Carroll who spent much of his life in Guildford), Our Son who is 1 is obsessed with the duck pond, the flower beds are beautiful to admire and we love having a picnic in the Victorian Bandstand by the bowls green. Little secret! There is a great independent coffee shop across the road called Krema, we often grab a coffee here on a weekend and head to the castle grounds. Isla is particularly fond of their babychino!

  • Parking? No, although plenty of car parks in and around the town.

  • Is it pushchair friendly? Absolutely! It’s a great workout pushing the buggy up the hill to top of the castle! The 360 views of Guildford & the countryside are amazing, although sadly you can’t go in the Castle at the moment due to government restrictions. There are winding stairs round the castle too if you are looking for an adventure and plenty of hiding places for older kids on the way up.

Fox Corner Wildlife Area

Recommended by Sophie @sophieliard

  • Where: Worplesdon, Entrance via Fox Corner, GU3 3PW

  • Why we like it - It’s enclosed so we can let the baby loose! It’s got lovely bridges and grassy paths, which makes it a great place to take the buggy.

  • Parking? No specific car park, but parking available on nearby streets.

  • Is it pushchair friendly? Yes

Alice Holt, Farnham

Recommended by Ann @amummyinsurrey

  • Where - Alice Holt, Farnham GU10 4LS

  • Why we like it - We love Alice Holt and the Gruffalo trail. It’s easy to find and has plenty of parking. The Gruffalo trail is fabulous with dens along the way which Freya loves and is also buggy friendly which is essential for us atm. There’s also a great cafe and when it’s open a brilliant little play area.

  • Parking? Yes, charges apply. See website for more details

  • Is it pushchair friendly? Yes

To find out more about Alice Holt, take a look at the Farnham Rocks website.

Blackheath Common, Chilworth

Recommended by Laura at Guildford Rocks

  • Where - Blackheath Car Park, Guildford, GU4 8RB

  • Why we like it - We're big fans of Blackheath as the mix of flat heathland and forest means there's lots for little ones to explore. Our toddler loves climbing the logs, and finding dens!

  • Parking? Yes, there are 2 car parks which are free. They can get busy though so either arrive early or avoid peak times.

  • Is it pushchair friendly? There are flat sandy paths which are suitable for an off-road buggy.
